How to Draw Smaug from The Hobbit

Start off by making the guides for the head, neck and upper body like you see here. You will also need to sketch in the facial guidelines.

Next, begin sketching out the actual structure of the dragon's or Smaug's snout, jaw line and frills. Once that is done you can draw in the horns and then the rest of the detailing on the head and face.

Draw the nostrils, color in the blackness inside the nose to create shading. You will then draw the eye shape then draw the marks on the horns and then add the crinkle above the eyes. These crinkle lines are actually the scales.

Now that the head and face are done you can draw the long slender neck shape which is also curled. Sketch in the left arm which is highly detailed from being muscular and toned.

Here you will draw the right shoulder, some of the chest definition and then add small scales throughout the body. Take your time so things come out accurately.

For the last drawing step all you have to do here is sketch out the shape of the wing which is cut off. Add detailing to the skin tissue of the wing, then draw in the definition on the actual arm of the wing. Erase your mistakes and then you are good

Here is what Smaug looks like when you are all done drawing him out. Now you can color him in and show other people what you have done.

Description: So there is a new dragon in town and it is from The Hobbit which is both a book and movie. I was asked by a bunch of people if I could make a tutorial on "how to draw Smaug", step by step. The dragon Smaug is one of the last great dragons from Middle Earth and he is described as being a "greedy, strong and wicked worm". I have not yet read The Hobbit or even seen the film, but I know that it is probably good because anything with dragons in it is always good since dragons make a bad movie better (at least to me anyway). The drawing of Smaug is pretty simple but it will be a challenge for novice artists. I thought I should throw that fact out to people since I know a lot of folks will be tackling this tut. If you have read The Hobbit or seen the film, please let me know if it's worth watching or reading. I shall return with more fun for you all so stay put and keep those pencils in hand. Drawing dragons is not the only reason to be an artist.
