Start out by picking your pencils. I used a 4H pencil for light shading, an H pencil for general shading/lines, a B pencil for dark lines, and a 4B pencil for dark shading. I also used an 8B pencil for my dark shading but that's optional.

Your sketch should end up looking something like this. I used an H pencil to sketch and then went over my lines with a blending stump.

Lightly sketch in the lighter feathers. Keep the feather direction in mind when drawing in your lines.

Now use a 4B pencil to roughly shade in your background then use a blending stump or paper towel to smooth out your shading.

Continue working on the head feathers. use a blending stump to smooth out the beak shading in preparation of details. Continue developing your background.

Define your beak using 3H and H pencils. Use a 3B pencil for the darker values/lines. As soon as you've finished up your beak shading roughly shade in the rest of the drawing with a 4B pencil.
