How to Draw a Black Horse, Black Horse

Artist: Dawn / February 3, 2012

Step 1.

Start off by making the head shape as well as the muzzle shape or snout. These are your beginning guides.

Step 2.

I was trying to go for a realistic horse muzzle which means the lining is going to have some contouring shapes. Start at the base of the forehead and work your way down in a slow moving stroke. You want to sketch instead of draw. Continue the lining

Step 3.

The next thing to do is draw out the arched shape of the horse's nostril. Sketch in the shallow hole for inside the nose, and then move up the face and begin the process of sketching out the eye. Add some wrinkle or crease lines under the eye like so

Step 4.

Since this is a fantasy style horse, I chose to blanket the top part of the head. You can choose to go with an average horse mane if you like, or you can follow this step and recreate the black horse you see here. The first thing you want to do is dr

Step 5.

Finish sketching in the long flowing mane which sort of turns into a different style. This is because the top of the horses head is covered with a tattered cloth or hood. The ends of the mane should be pointed, straight, and darkened. Draw the bridle

Step 6.

When you are done you can start the coloring process to complete the drawing. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on a black horse as much as I did making it.

Description: I'm going to make this tutorial how it is because I've had frequent people ask me to make this into a tut (during the livestream process and artwork posting). I wanted to expand my skills and strive for a more detailed and painted artwork like that of professional painters in the art industry today. I'm not sure if I want to progress into painting a dragon next in the same style or a fantasy character geared with intensely detailed armor. Anyways, this horse took me a duration of three days to get where it is. Lots of hours were spent and it is still yet to be finished. I will update this tutorial with the finished version and see if it makes a more stable impact. Well, It's time for me to get to work on my next tutorials. Have fun drawing a black horse, and I hope you guys will enjoy and stay tuned for more lessons!
