How To Draw Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby

To draw Leonardo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby, we should first sketch in some basic construction lines. Use a 2H or hard pencil so that the lines are easy to erase when we ink later on. Sketch the basic shape of the head and upper torso. The head should ha

Let's begin with the eyes. Since he will be smiling, the eyes should be squinting slightly, with the lower lid higher than normal. Be sure to draw the eyes evenly along the horizontal construction line. The rule of thumb is that eyes are roughly one

Work your way down the face by drawing the nose and mouth. Be sure they align with the vertical construction line running down the middle of the face. He should have a big smile on his face, so draw the corners of the mouth curved upwards. Be sure to

Now draw the creases around the mouth and nose. There should be a large crease protruding from the corners of the nostrils, wrapping around the corners of the mouth. There should be a couple other, thinner creases on either corner of the mouth as wel

Draw the contours of the face. The corners of the jaw line should align with the mouth. The chin should be fairly large.

The ears should rest slightly high on the head. The middle of the ears should be roughly in line with the eyebrows.

Gatsby always has very sleek, well groomed hair. It should be parted on the left side and have a prominent wave on the right side. Leo has a strong widows-peak in the center of his hairline, so don't forget to draw that.

Add more wrinkles and folds to the face, but be careful not to add too many. Gatsby is in his early thirties, so we don't want him to look old. Draw forehead wrinkles and more wrinkles around the chin and cheek bones.

Let's start working on the torso. Draw the large lapels of his tuxedo jacket. Notice how the back of the collar lifts high in the back of the neck because his arm is raised. The points on the lapel should point upwards.

Now draw the undershirt and vest. The undershirt should have a few wavy vertical lines in the middle of it, covering the buttons. Only a portion of the vest should be visible. You can give it stripes if you wish. Draw a bow tie under his chin.

Draw the left shoulder and arm. The shoulder should have a prominent point on the end since the jacket is well pressed. The jacket will be filled in with black later, so it's not necessary to draw the edge of his chest since it will be too dark to se

The right hand should be slightly large, since it is outstretched towards us. The fingers will be wrapped around the bottom of a Champaign glass. The thumb should point upwards, the index finger should be pointing towards us slightly. The pinky finge

Now draw the Champagne glass, which should have a fat body. It should be half full of Champagne. Notice how the top of the glass, and the level of the fluid in the glass are not straight lines. Instead, they are thin oval shapes. This gives the glass

Draw the right arm and shoulder. The arm should have a few folds in the fabric. Draw a couple of buttons on the cuff of the jacket's sleeve, and be sure to draw a little bit of the undershirt sleeve peeking out from beneath the jacket.

Now that we are done penciling the image, we can ink it using a Micron marker or a brush and India ink. A brush works wonderfully when inking hair. Carefully go over each line with patience and be sure not to accidentally ink any unneeded guide lines

You can add more depth to the image by giving it shadow. Establish your light source and use black ink or a fat tipped black marker to shade the opposite side of the figure and every clothing wrinkle and fold. Black out his entire jacket, since it's

If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. You can also use it to add highlights if needed. In this case, I redrew the lapel and wrinkles of the jacket. I also added more shine to the glass. And that is how you draw Leo
