Artist:

Step 1.
Start out by picking your supplies. I used a 3H pencil for final details/light shading, a B pencil for general shading and sketching, and a 3B pencil for my darkest shading. I also used mixed media paper for this drawing.

Step 2.
Start by sketching in some basic shapes with a B pencil. Get basic shapes to represent the head, thorax, and abdomen.

Step 3.
Lightly sketch in the head features. Don't worry about details yet.

Step 5.
Sketch in some guidelines for the mosquito's legs. Just use lines for the limbs and circles for the joints.

Build the mosquito's legs around the guidelines. You can erase your guidelines as you move along with the sketch.

Erase any unnecessary guidelines then lightly go over your lines again with a B pencil.

Step 9.
Use a piece of paper towel or tissue to blend over your drawing. If you used a soft enough pencil for sketching and made your lines dark enough, you won't lose all of your lines by blending.

Step 10.
For this step I used a 3B pencil to lightly shade in the head features. Shade as lightly as you can. Add any highlights using an eraser as well.

Step 11.
I added some detail and went over my shading with a B pencil here. The easiest way to go about this is by working your way inwards from the outlines and shading the darkest areas first. You can go over the darkest areas with a 3B pencil if a B pencil
isn't producing dark enough values.

Use a 3B pencil to roughly shade in the bottom half of the thorax as well as the foremost legs.

Step 13.
Use a B pencil to refine your shading. Again, go over your darkest areas with a 3B pencil to make them even darker.

Define the wings, abdomen and legs. Use a B pencil to shade as much as you can then use a 3B pencil on the darkest areas.

Step 18.
Use a 3B pencil to add some light/rough shading to the background. This is completely optional; you can do anything you want with your background.

Step 20.
Now you can start adding finishing details from left to right. I used a 3H pencil for the most minute details and to smooth out my lightest shading. Go over your outlines with a B pencil and use a 3B pencil to smooth out your darkest shading.

Step 21.
Finish up your detail and smooth out your background some more by lightly shading with a 3H pencil/blending with a blending stump. Call your drawing done once you've gone over all of you shading and lines once more. As much as I detest mosquitoes in
real life, I have to admit that I learned a lot from drawing them! Let me know how you do with this drawing!
