How to Draw The Grey Heron, The Boy and the Heron

Go ahead and start with the shapes and guidelines for the heron.

We will use the facial and head guide to draw out the start of the head, eye, and beak or bill as well as some of the neck. Add the definition to the eye and beak.

Finish draw out the beak/bill like so and then draw in the start of the bottom part of the neck.

Okay, here you will draw out the rather thick tongue as well as the detailing inside the heron's mouth. When that is done you can draw some of the smaller wing.

Next, draw the rest of the body as well as the wing. Sketch in the feather detailing to add texture.

Now make the signature Studio Ghibli marks on the chest, (almost like Totoro's) and then draw the foot as well as the border line. Erase the mistakes and guides as well to clean up the drawing.

Here is the line art when you are done. Go ahead and color in your new character from The Boy and the Heron, or Robert Pattinson as the Heron.

Description: I suppose I couldn't make a lesson on Mahito Maki without making a tutorial on the heron from the Studi Ghibli movie so here it is. There wasn't much to go with as far as reference pictures go. I had to find a reference and work with it. I did my best and hopefully, my best is good enough. It took a while to make this drawing because I am not good at all with drawing animals let alone birds. So, here you go. Here is how to draw the grey heron from the boy and the heron. Robert Pattinson did an awesome job with his voice. I was so shocked and didn't even believe that was him. Go ahead and have fun. I will return in a bit with another lesson for you all to enjoy and learn from. Don't forget to let me know what you think of this tutorial. Feedback helps a lot when improvement is involved.
