How to Draw Realistic Clothing

Step 1.

Let's start with tops for females. Start by lightly drawing the torso. Go into as much detail as you are comfortable with.

Step 2.

The next step is to lightly sketch in any bras or undershirts.

Step 3.

Now you can sketch and lightly shade in the shirt.

Step 4.

And finally go in and add some dark shading as well as details.

Step 5.

Alright, lets move on to male tops. Start out with a light sketch of the torso again.

Step 6.

Sketch in the under shirts.

Step 7.

Now you can sketch in the basic shape of the clothing. Keep the lines and shading light.

Step 8.

And finally you can add details, like patterns, using darker shading and clearer lines.

Step 9.

Alright, time to move on to the bottom half of the body. Start out by lightly sketching the figure from the waist down. You can sketch in some underwear.

Step 10.

Now, sketch over the basic shape of your clothing. Don't add details yet and keep the shading light.

Step 11.

Gradually define your clothing by adding outlines and creases/folds. Also,start hinting at the lighting by erasing and light shading.

Step 12.

Here is the result of darker shading and adding details. What details and how much detail you add is completely up to you.

Step 13.

Jeans are usually easier to draw on textured paper. I used cold press paper to draw mine. Start off with the figure and underwear again.

Step 14.

Lightly outline and shade in the shape of the clothing.

Step 15.

Work in a few details in this step like the folds, buttons, belt loops, and pockets. You can also develop the lighting and shading a bit.

Step 16.

Finally darken and add in whatever details you feel like adding. I chose to add a few tears and patches. Again, the texture of the paper takes care of the almost grainy look that most jeans have.

Step 17.

Let's work on layering clothing a bit. Start off with a male figure from neck to ankles. sketch in any undershirts and underwear.

Step 18.

Next, lightly sketch in the shirt, tie, and pants. It is alright if you can still see the lines leftover from the previous step.

Step 19.

Next, sketch in the suit jacket. You can layering the clothing at any step and add details and shading. I chose to keep layering.

Step 20.

The last layer of clothing I added was this trench coat. You can start outlining the final layer during this step. don't worry about erasing the lines from previous steps though.

Step 21.

Step 22.

Start shading in values from lightest to darkest. the shading should all be dark enough to cover up any unwanted lines.

Step 23.

Finally, here is the result of the details and shading. Remember you can make the clothing as dark or as light as you want it to be.
