Start out with a rough and basic sketch. Use the guidelines if you need them. Just try to get a basic idea of the features down.
3
Your sketch should look something like this. I softened my lines a bit by lightly blending over the drawing with a paper towel.
5
Use a kneadable eraser to erase any unwanted shading and B and HB pencil to start roughly shading. Start shading at the eyes and forehead.
6
Use a blending stump to smooth out your shading a bit. You can also use a 4H pencil to shade lightly and add texture to his skin.
10
Start adding more layers of shading to make the hat look smoother. You can use a blending stump to help you.
11
Start finishing up the hat by working on its outline. 6B may be to soft for outlining the hat so use a B pencil instead to make the hat's edges crisp.
12
After you're done with the hat shade in the background. I roughly shaded with a 6B pencil then used a blending stump to smooth out my shading.
15
Now blend in your shading using a blending stump. After this point you can move back up to the face to start adding final details.
16
Now balance out the shading of the face mainly by making it darker. Use a B pencil to darken his facial hair and eyes. Use HB and 4H pencils on his skin.
17
Now move down to his neck and clothes.Use HB and 4H pencils for his skin and shirt. Use 6B and B pencils for his jacket. Use a blending stump to smooth out your shading.
