How to Draw Shojo, Draw Shoujo Anime

1

Generally speaking, Shoujo usually deals with with young girls in junior high or high school and their relationships with other people. Plots tend to focus on character development rather than action and other outside influences. That isn't to say th

The best part about anime and manga is how you can portray the same thing in some many different ways. Take, for example, these three head close-ups. Each girl has the same general type of face and hairstyle, but look how different they are. When dra

Now let's focus on one style for now. Here we have a basic style that would suit a shoujo manga, and with that style I have created three different body types. It's important to have different body types for your characters. Sometimes these body type

An easy way to differentiate female characters is by breast size. It shouldn't be the only difference between the character you draw, but it helps. Here is a general size chart of common...and not so common, sizes.

5

Now let's try a step-by-step of an average chest. Remember that breasts sit on top of the rib cage so learning to draw the rib cage underneath will help you make a more believable chest

6

Here are some different angles that a chest is viewed from.

7

Now that we've discussed the body in detail, let's move on to hair. Here are some examples of typical shoujo hair styles. It's easy to make lots of hairstyles if you switch out the bangs and the back of the hair for many combinations.

8

With all those tips in mind, let's try sketching the first of our three girls. Sketch the guidelines.

9

Sketch the lines for the torso.

10

Add the lines for the arms, dipping in at the elbow.

11

Now for the legs, they should be roughly twice the width of the arm's width.

12

Finish the arm and legs with hands and feet.

13

Follow the curve of the guidelines while sketching in the head.

14

Finish the girl with her facial features, making sure to place the eyes so they rest on the horizontal guidelines.

15

Here I've added hair to our three body types and gave them a typical school girl skirt. Notice the differences in how each girl wears her skirt. Body type helps determine a character, but so do her clothes.

16

Add a vest and a short sleeve shirt to the first and third girl, which the one in the middle wears her shirt opened. Draw some lines for socks, once again noting how each character differs in style.

17

Here are the finished girls, each one different from the other and ready to enter a shoujo manga. Use these tips to create your own believable shoujo girls. Have fun creating your own style.
