How To Draw Canine Front Paws

Artist: FlareOfAmethyst / March 6, 2009

Step 1.

First, you need the skeleton of the leg.

Step 2.

Begin to draw out the outline for the leg.

Step 3.

Draw in the actual paw. Canines have four toes, so technically, only two toes should be seen from this position. I like to draw in that third toe. It looks more natural to me.

Step 4.

Add the fur that's around the elbow and the shoulder joint there. If your canine isn't as furry, use this stage to narrow the space between the elbow and shoulder lines.

Step 5.

Add the claws. These can be as sharp or as dull as you want.

Step 6.

Now it's time for the other leg! Draw out the skeleton.

Step 7.

Draw the outline.

Step 8.

Add the claws. Don't forget the dewclaw! You don't necessarily need to add this, as it is sometimes removed, especially with show and race dogs.

Step 9.

Finish by cleaning up stray lines or fixing anything that looks off.

Description: The way I draw canine front paws. The paws I draw are more cartoony, so things aren't perfect. My paws are easy to draw, though, which is always nice! :)
