Begin by drawing the guide shapes and guidelines. Sketch in the facial guidelines as well.

Up next, draw the shape and structure of Bear's head. This should include the ears as well. Don't forget to make those cheeks puffy.

Up next, sketch in the shapes of those piercing eyes. When that is done sketch in definition around the eyes which is his coat hair. Add the crinkle between the eyes.

We can now draw in Bear's muzzle which is also his snout or nose. Add the tongue and then draw the detailing inside the ears. Bear wore a black leather spiked collar, so draw that in as well along with the studs.

Now that his head and face are finished, we can proceed on with the body. Sketch out the fluffy neck and then draw the shoulders, chest and then the angled lining for his back. You will also sketch in some of his tail.

Let us now draw in the front legs and paws. When that is done draw in the chest as well. Bear was a big dog. He weighed around 95 pounds.

Finish drawing this Black Shepherd by drawing the back legs and paws. Add that fluffy tuft of coat behind the thigh and draw in his stomach. Erase the mistakes and guides.

That's it, you are all done with drawing a Black German Shepherd. Now you can color him in black, or maybe even black and tan if you have a preference.

Description: Over this past weekend, a horrible thing happened to my long time friend, companion, guardian and protector. My almost seven year old black German Shepherd, Bear passed away. We have had Bear since he was an eight week old German Shepherd puppy, and when I found out that he was no longer with us, it was very hard for me to deal with his loss. Bear was a very unique Shepherd. I thought of him more like a brother than I did a dog. He would always follow his family no matter where we went. If we went out to the store, he would sit outside in front of the door and waited for us to return. Bear loved going for long ATV rides, but he would much rather run instead of hitch a ride with us. His eyes were so very piercing and human like. I loved him dearly and this lesson is a tribute to my dog Bear. I don't care how many years go by, he will always be with me. One good thing that is making his loss a bit easier, is the fact I have one of his sons from a previous litter of German Shepherd puppies he sired three months ago. We named our new Black Shepherd Dozer, and he looks exactly like his dad. He too is all black, has piercing brown eyes and has his personality.
