How to Draw Mercury

Now, Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and has a diameter of three thousand thirty two miles which is a lot bigger than the size of our planet Earth. You would think that a planet that is so close to sun can be seen right? Wrong, the only way to see Mercury is with a telescope. If you live out west, you are fortunate enough to see the planet in the sky during sunset at different times of the year. As with any planet that lays so close to the sun, mercury rotates the fastest out of all nine planets in our solar system. Like with planet Venus, mercury also got it's name from the ancient Romans. The Romans named this planet Mercury in honor of their gods. Roman gods like Zeus, Neptune, so on and so forth. The Roman god of Mercury is Hermes. Hermes is the god of trade, profit, merchants and travelers. Other than what or who this planet is named after, another cool fact about Mercury is that, it takes eighty eight earth days just to rotate around the sun only once. That means it takes two months and twenty days of our time. Wow that is so cool. Do you know why we can't see Mercury from planet earth without a telescope? Because the dark side of the planet is always facing earth. What is also very cool is, every three to thirteen years, mercury can be seen as a black spot on the sun. When this happens, mercury is in transit as it orbits the sun. Have you ever wondered what the surface of the planet is like? Well to be exact, the surface of mercury is much like the moon. This planet only reflects about six percent of the sunlight that hits it. There is also a thin layer of minerals called silicates just like that of the moon. If that's not weird enough, mercury also has steep cliffs, and craters that are formed when meteors and comets hit this lonely planet. The atmosphere of this planet is very dry, extremely hot, and almost airless. Although there is some major similarities with mercury and the moon, one of the more uncommon factors between the two is that there are poles on the planet that contain water ice. But these pockets of ice stay frozen because the temperature never increases where the sun never shines.
