How to Draw a Foo Dog, Foo Dog Statue

Step 1.
Start out by picking your pencils. I used a 3H pencil for sketching/light shading, H pencil for general shading, and a 4B pencil for dark shading.

Your sketch may end up looking something like this. Make sure to sketch as lightly as possible. Erase any unneeded guidelines.

Now start adding line details to your drawing. Work from top to bottom.

Continue moving down. Don't overdo the strength of the lines. Make sure that they are light enough to erase.

Detail the rest of the foo dog's body.

Now sketch in the baby foo dog beneath the adult one's paw.

Roughly shade in the background using a 4B pencil. Then blend in your shading with a paper towel or blending stump.

Continue moving downs the body with your shading. Try to give your shading a rough/weathered look. DO NOT use a blending stump to smooth your shading. Do your best to just use natural shading to create unique/realistic texture.

Shade in the front legs and start shading in the baby foo dog.

Define the baby foo dog then shade in the rest of the body. Use a 4B pencil for the dark shadows.

Hey everyone here's a fun tutorial on how to draw a Chinese guardian lion, or a foo dog. I've always enjoyed observing ancient statue designs but drawing them is even more fun!
