How to Draw Arrietty, The Secret World of Arrietty

Step 1.


You will begin by making some shapes and guides to form a workable frame for your drawing of Arrietty. Draw a circle for the head and then add the guidelines for the neck, shoulders, torso, and hips.

Step 2.


Begin sketching out the face like so, and then be sure to incorporate her ear. The cheek and chin should also be drawn in neatly and nicely.

Step 3.


Okay, now you can work on getting her face sketched in. Start with the eyes and then draw the eyebrows, nose and mouth. The top lining should be thick or bold.

Step 4.


All you have to do is draw in the top part of her hairstyle which should be like a ball because she has her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Add a part line in the middle, and then draw a small twirl.

Step 5.


To finish off her hair, draw a long bushy ponytail that has some bounce. Draw in her small clip and then add detailing to the clip and side of her head.

Step 6.


Begin sketching out her body starting with the shape of her neck. Draw the shoulders, short sleeves, and then draw the long one piece dress outline.

Step 7.


Next, sketch in her dress neckline like so which is a V shape. Draw the arms and hands and then draw the completed hands.

Step 8.


Draw the strap around her torso which is for the sack she carries on her back. You will also need to draw her belt and some material detailing on her dress.

Step 9.


All you have to do here is draw her first leg as well as her shoe or shin high boot. Sketch detailing and definition for the boot and then move to step ten.

Step 10.


For the last drawing step all you have to do is draw the other leg and then draw some of the boot that visible. Clean up the drawing to prepare it for color.

Step 11.


Here she is all buttoned up and beautiful. Color her in and tackle some other lessons of the characters from the series.

Description: I have some pretty special tutorials going up today and I know most of you will recognize the first three. To start the day off I just had to go ahead and show you guys how to draw Arrietty, step by step. She is the main character in the Japanese anime fantasy movie ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’. One of the reasons why I am so excited to be doing these lessons is because the new film release is by the same individual that brought us ‘Ponyo’, Spirited Away’, and others. Disney is presenting the new release which is by Studio Ghurli and it should be in theaters February 17 of this year. Anyways, let me talk about who this lesson is based on. Arrietty is a little person that lives in a secret world under the floorboards of home in a suburban area. The reason why there is a lot of forest and foliage in her world is because the house that they live under is a garden home. The folks that live or own the house have no idea that there is a family of little people in existence. Once and a while they will emerge from their hiding to borrow things like sugar, or anything else they need. Arrietty is a fourteen year old girl that who literally puts her family at risk of being discovered when she becomes friends with a twelve year old human boy that comes to stay in the home. I loved making this tutorial on drawing Arrietty and I think you will too. The film is actually based on a very popular children’s book series called ‘The Borrowers’ wrote by Mary Norton. I have yet to pick up the series to read it for myself. Have fun folks and be sure to rate and comment.
