If you really want to get technical, seahorses that are from North and South American waters, can be found in four different types of species. The descriptions of the body of these fish like horse looking critters are elongate with rigid body armor and they swim upright. They also have pectoral fins on the sides and a small dorsal fin on the back. The dorsal fin on the seahorses body waves rapidly to move the seahorse through the water. They feed using small mouths at the end of tubular snouts. These fish are known to be carnivores. A rare fact about seahorses is that they are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young, and they are considered to be completely monogamous animals that stay with one mate for life. How sweet is that? Now, with the male seahorse they have a brood pouch on their front facing side. When the two love horses mate, the female drops a load of her eggs into his pouch which then gets fertilized by the male from inside. He will continue to carry the fertilized eggs until they hatch and are released fully formed and developed. Neat huh, I think that is wicked cool. Another cool fact about seahorses is that when they eat, they anchor themselves to coral with their tails and consume by sucking in, 3,000 brine shrimp per day. WOW!
