How to Draw a Peony, Peony Flower

Let us begin by drawing the guides which starts out as one big circle. You will then continue to draw a series of shapes and lines in the center until you have a drawing that looks like the one you see here.

Now that you have the guides drawn out, you can begin this sketch. Start in the center and begin sketching out the dense petals that are closed in on one another. Proceed to work your way out as you sketch more petals like so. Notice how the edging o

Continue to work on getting those peony petals sketched out. I did them in sections instead of all at once. It's probably better to start in the back rather than the front. Again, make sure the petals edges are crinkled lined.

Now you will be sketching out the guard petals of the peony flower. The larger outer petals are the ones that protect the inside petals. Sketch them out with ease because these petals is what makes the peony recognizable.

The last step is to sketch in more of the petals until you have a completed image. Sketch in the detailing to the petals like so, then move to see how the line art looks before you begin the shading process.

We will now start the sketching or shading process. Start by shading the foundation to the center of the flower. The very center should be darker then the outer petals.

Continue shading the petals. Do this at a slow rate so you get a nice even stroke to make the flower more detailed and defined.

Finish shading the peony until all the petals are filled in. It is important that you make your strokes in one direction. If you shade using an up and down stroke then switch to a side by side stroke, the shading will end up looking ridiculous.

Description: Did I even say Happy Valentine’s Day yet? Well, Happy V-Day, I hope you have a true love or someone special that you are spending today with. In light of this lovers holiday I will be uploading the second flower tutorial that I made for you all. I sketched this flower earlier today because I knew that people where going to be doing some last minute drawing to make Valentine’s Day cards. Here is one of my favorite blossoms, "how to draw a Peony". The peony looks a lot like a carnation which is why they sometimes get confused with one another. Peonies have a distinct look about them and are well recognized to folks who know this species of flower. They start blooming in spring and stay blooming right on through summer. They grow to get anywhere between one to two feet tall, and have large petals that are dense in the center where the stamens start and pollen is formed. The outer petals to a peony are called guard petals, and they basically protect the center of the flower where the stamens are. Sketching out this flower can be a challenge because there are so many petals to draw. I myself had an awesome time with the sketch, and it actually ended up being my favorite flower drawing for the day. So go ahead and tackle this lesson on drawing a peony.
